Transport system may see overhaul

Flaunting a new name and a new address, the Bangalore Metro is all set to make a heady start.

The Bangalore Mass Rapid Transit Limited has been re-christened Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) and will be soon shifting base to the newly-built BMTC Bus Stand on Double Road at Shanthinagar.

Addressing a press conference on Friday, BMRC Managing Director K N Shrivatsava announced that nearly 102 acres of defence land were sanctioned to the BMRC for the execution of the Bangalore Metro project on August 23. Defence land has been acquired in Peenya, M G Road, S V Road and Old Madras Road. Mr Shrivatsava added that acquisition of private land, amounting to roughly 28 acres, will be completed within three months.

The transportation system in Bangalore will witness a major overhaul, with the bus service and the metro coming under a common transport authority, Shrivatsava revealed. “The Government is seriously considering creating a single transport authority, and maybe such a body will be formed even before the Bangalore Metro project is commissioned,” he said.

Commenting on the recent protests by CMH Road traders, Mr Shrivatsava insisted that “there will be no changes in the proposed routes”.
