Peripheral areas to get five new RTOs soon

Peripheral areas to get five new RTOs soon

The inauguration to be held on August 15, is seen as a way to decongest the existing RTOs and to cover all other parts of the City.

For road users in Bangalore, Independence Day will come with a special bonanza. The City is about to get five more Regional Transport Officer (RTO) offices, in the peripheral areas of the city: K R Puram, Yelahanka, Rajarajeshwarinagar, Bannerghatta and Nelamangala.

“The plan is in finalisation stage, and we will inaugurate it on August 15. The RTOs have been appointed following Government Order. We are looking at decongesting the existing RTOs and cover all parts of the city,” said Transport Commissioner Om Prakash.

The new RTOs will cover major roads, including Hosur Road, Bannerghatta Road, Bellary Road, Old Madras Road and Mysore Road.

Space constraints

But even as the RTOs continue to spread, space remains a nagging constraint. These RTOs will still have to use neighbourhood lanes as driving tracks, as the promised tracks on BMTC land is yet to be delivered. BMTC has postponed construction of tracks until a formal Government Order allowing them to levy user charges on the Transport Department.

“We do not own land in the city and have to depend on BMTC and other corporations for the same. We have requested the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA) to allot land near the ring roads where we can build tracks,” Mr Prakash said.

While space continues to be a problem for the five existing RTOs in the central parts of the city: Indiranagar, Jayanagar, Koramangala, Rajajinagar and Yeshwantpur, the new batch will be luckier.

As these RTOs are in the outer parts of the city, there are many open spaces that can be developed into driving tracks, said Mr Prakash. RTOs in K R Puram and Yelahanka will share the tracks of Indiranagar and Yeshwantpur while others will use the neighbouring spaces for conducting driving tests, Mr Prakash added.
