BANGALORE: The Bangalore Development Authority expects to throw open the Ananda Rao Circle flyover to traffic by the first week of November. The project is likely to cost over Rs. 27.6 crores.

The flyover project began two years ago with the aim of decongesting one of the most crowded road junctions in the city. It is a road hub for vehicles going to Vidhana Soudha, Race Course Road, Hudson Circle, and Mahatma Gandhi Road. Because of the one-way regulations on other major roads around, it has become an important North-South traffic corridor.

Hub

While construction is still on, chaos prevails around the hub, especially when long-distance trains and buses arrive at the city railway station and the Kempegowda Bus Station nearby. Vehicles from Rajajinagar, Chord Road, Basaveshwaranagar and Vijayanagar contribute to the confusion. Anandarao Circle is a boarding point for several long-distance private buses.

The traffic density as recorded by the transport and police departments touches 15,200 passenger car units per hour during the peak period in the morning and evening and only slightly less at other times. One of the ramps of the flyover is from Subbanna Circle where the peak hour traffic density is around 9,700 passenger car units per hour. Add to this buses and three-wheelers and you get the picture.

The flyover has been planned to take on all this traffic. The main carriageway is from Khoday's Circle and along Seshadri Road for 646 metres with a width of 14 metres. The earlier schedule was for the flyover to be completed by now but the transporters' strike added to the delay, BDA officials said.
