BANGALORE: Kannada matinee idol Rajkumar has come forward to support and inspire the "Green Basavanagudi" drive, launched by the area MLA, K. Chandrashekar, in June.

In the aftermath of several trees being damaged and uprooted during the pre-monsoon showers and also to mark World Environment Day, which was observed on June 5, all the six elected representatives of the Basavanagudi Assembly constituency, led by Mr. Chandrashekar, had resolved to go on a tree-planting spree and plant over 25,000 saplings across the constituency.

About 5,000 saplings have been planted in the constituency in the last one month. Dr. Rajkumar will plant the 5001th sapling on July 6 at Sajjan Rao Circle in V.V. Puram.

To inspire the residents, especially women and students, take up tree planting, Dr. Rajkumar will also distribute saplings for planting in all available vacant land and various schools and colleges, a press release said.

The six corporators representing wards in Basavanagudi, Geeta Sadashiv (Kempegowdanagar), P.R. Ramesh (V.V. Puram), B.S. Satyanarayana (Basavanagudi), Lalitha Srinivasa Gowda (Srinagar), A. H. Basavaraju (Ganesh Mandir), besides Mr. Chandrashekar, have taken up drive in their areas on priority, the release said.

On the same day, groups of students from various schools and colleges in the constituency will take out processions to convey the message of "Green Basavanagudi" through tableau and "dollu kunitha."

The processions, which will start from each of the wards, will finally converge at Sajjan Rao Circle.

As it has been observed that trees with weak roots and deep roots are prone to getting uprooted, saplings of varieties whose roots are strong will be planted, the release said.

During the programme, 10 prominent roads in and around Basavanagudi will be given in adoption to various organisations for maintaining the trees and protecting them.

According to Mr. Chandrashekar, the residents will be allowed to choose the variety of saplings that they would like to plant in front of their houses.
