BANGALORE: If you are tired of mathematics and geometry here is a great alternative. Along with history and languages, students will now learn behaviour and lifecycle of predators to insects.
Thanks to an NGO, which will teach students about elephants, tigers, snakes, birds and spiders.
In an initiative to create awareness about nature and wildlife conservation among school children, an city based NGO will begin conducting awareness sessions for high-school students in more than 40 schools of Bangalore.
Experts and scientists from Indian Institute of Science will deliver lectures on study of birds, reptiles, insects and animals.
Club of Awareness and Nature Study (CAN) will begin its journey to the schools in July. CAN is an NGO formed with an objective of working for the conservation of nature and natural resources and has been doing school programmes from last two years.
Daniel Sukumar, managing trustee, CAN, told this website’s newspaper that the prime initiative of the project is to save the environment and promote conservation.
“We look to educate the urban and rural children in conservation of wild life, through interactive programmes like slide shows, movie shows and field visits. In order to create awareness and provide technical assistance in conserving forests, fresh water, air and other vanishing natural entities,” he said.
“We will select 40 students from 8, 9 and 10th standards and conduct two classes in a month. Experienced naturalists and scientists will teach a theory class and a slide show session. Dr Surendra Verma of Centre for Ecological Science, IISC will conduct seminars during the programmes,” he explained.
“Follow up classes will be undertaken by school faculties. Quiz competitions and seminars are also part of the project. Later the students will be taken to for field visits to experience the nature”, Sukumar added.
CAN is planning to extend the awareness project to the other districts of Karnataka. “We are gathering like minded people out of Bangalore and we will expand our teaching programmes also to the rural areas. Students from the rural region should made more aware about the conservation as they live very close to nature”, he said.
