Soma Enterprise, the Rs 330 crore infrastructure developer, has completed the road widening works on the Mysore-Maddur stretch of the Bangalore-Mysore state highway five months ahead of schedule.

The Rs 116.20 crore road project provides a direct link between Bangalore and Mysore. When the project is complete, the travel time from Bangalore to Mysore will be reduced to 2 hours from present 3.5 hours. However, the Bangalore-Maddur section of the project is yet to be completed.

Addressing a press conference at Maddur in Mandya district, Ankineedu Maganti, director, Soma Enterprise, said work on the project commenced in May 2004 and was scheduled for completion in December 2005. But the company was able to do it ahead of schedule.

Soma had bagged the contract directly from Karnataka Road Development Corporation Limited (KRDCL). Detailed engineering design and project report was prepared by Span Consultants. KRDCL entrusted the construction supervision and project management to Consulting Engineering Service (India).

The road project involved construction of four major bridges across Lokapavani, Cauvery and Paschimavahini rivers, a 7 metre wide carriageway and 2.5 metre wide earthen shoulder on both sides, 23 minor bridges, straightening of 19 curves, 122 culverts, 22 bus bays, two-truck lay-byes. To enhance durability modified bitumen has been used for the pavement layer.

“The project was a challenge to the company as it had to ensure safety of travellers and construction workers during construction with density of traffic estimated at 18,000 to 20,000 passenger vehicles per day,” said Maganti. “The improved route between Bangalore and Mysore will also have a multiplier effect on Karnataka?s economy, besides easing traffic on this stretch,” he added.
