Gowda cries halt to Metro

Gowda cries halt to Metro
The Times of India

BANGALORE: Former PM H.D.Deve Gowda has now trained his guns on the Rs 6,207-crore Bangalore Metro Rail project and has opposed stating it would land Karnataka "into a total financial, environmental and social chaos". In the same breath, Gowda has suggested "cheaper and less-intrusive" transport system to ease Bangalore’s traffic such as light rail system and monorail, especially the hybrid monorail. In letters written separately to Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and chief minister N. Dharam Singh, Gowda on Saturday has listed reasons as to why both Centre and state government should relook at the project.

Gowda said, "The Metro Rail is a ruinous expensive project which guzzles power and takes time to build. During construction, (it) plays havoc with the lives of citizens, uprooting shops, residences and even places of worship." Patting the PM for identifying urban infrastructure as an area meriting urgent consideration, Gowda said there are, however, strong reasons to doubt the wisdom of replicating the Delhi Metro for cities like Bangalore and Hyderabad.

"I would urge you to subject the draft National Mass Rapid Transit system policy documents prepared by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) submitted to the Centre for exhaustive review and debate by professionals and experts in such systems," he told the PM.

He wanted the PM to advise Public Investment Board, Planning Commission and ministries to exercise all caution and carefully analyse the various aspects of Bangalore’s Metro rail proposal before coming to any conclusion. What CM should do: Suspend all ongoing work on the Metro Rail project and constitute an expert committee to examine whether it can be executed in a "cheaper and less-destructive way". The expert committee could comprise the chief secretary, principal secretaries of urban, finance and law departments and two experts on mass transportation.

This moron has nothing better to do then cry halt to every small or big infrastructure development activity in the city just because he didn't get the cut of the loot.

People like this should be shutoff from politics. All he cares about is his wealth and his well being. Should make him drive by himself in the city during peak hours or make him commute by a BMTC bus or a autorickshaw.
