Checking drive: B’loreans heave sigh of relief

Bangalore: With police commissioner S Mariswamy ordering his force to pull up socks and set up 10 checkpoints in each police station limit, the city police have finally woken up to the increasing crime rate in the City. This has led to intensified checking by the police after 10 p m, which appears to be bitter but necessary pill to swallow for Bangaloreans.
The city now wears a war-time look at night, with khaki-clad cops in attendance at every second junction.
The drive, implemented since Monday night, has forced motorists to stop and produce papers for verification. The drive mainly targets miscreants who have taken to victimising BPO and IT professionals plying at night.
"This would temporarily cause inconvenience to innocent drivers, but there appears to be no other way to check crime at night," said a senior police official.
However, IT and BPO professionals have at last heaved a sigh of relief. "We can now reach home safely without having to worry about someone mugging us. This drive is thus a promising step towards ensuring the safety of those travelling late at night," said Mukul Shah, working in an IT firm.
