We’ll improve infrastructure, asserts CM

Pointing out that Bangalore is on the international map today, the Chief Minister has promised support to Infosys in terms of expansion and infrastructure.

In what was an informal visit with family to the Infosys campus on Hosur Road on Wednesday, Chief Minister Dharam Singh reaffirmed the State government’s commitment to improving the infrastructure in the City besides promising to look into the demands made by IT major Infosys.

Announcing that the process for sanctioning 300 acres of land at Yelahanka to Infosys, as part of its expansion plans was in final stages, Mr Singh said that the state government was ready to support the company which had helped put Bangalore on the international map. “We will help them get what they want, in an effort to generate more employment,” he said. Towards this end, the state also plans to sanction the 50 acres of land sought by Infosys at the proposed Rs 390 crore hi-tech city.

“With nearly 45 per cent of Infosys’ workforce based in Bangalore, the company is growing in size. A development centre will be constructed at Yelahanka too and employees may be recruited on a scale similar to the one in Chennai,” said Mr Narayan Murthy, Chief Mentor and Chairman Infosys, adding that as many as 25,000 employees were likely to be recruited to the Infosys unit in Chennai.
While welcoming the State’s move of sanctioning land for Infosys’ expansion, Mr Murthy said that a project proposal for the expansion plan had been submitted and construction work would start within a month or two after

the land was allotted. Mr Singh who appeared very relaxed cracked jokes about how famous the international airport project had become said the news had spread so much that even Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin had asked about the progress of the airport!

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh too sought to know about the project, he said.
“Though the coalition government had its problems in the initial days, it is committed to improve the city so that people who come from other countries do not take back a bad impression with them,” Mr Dharam Singh said, adding that work on the metro rail and international airport projects were on course.

Mrs Prabhavati Singh, Mr Dharam Singh’s son Ajay Singh, Sudha Murthy, Nandan Nilekani and senior government officials were shown around the Infosys campus in the Electronics City.

It is said that Mr Singh was visiting Infosys with his family at the personal invitation of Mr Murthy.
