Surprise showers cool city

Surprise showers cool city

Deccan Herald

Perhaps the rain-gods decided to smile over Finance Minister Siddaramaiah’s soft corner for the agriculture sector. Perhaps they decided to bow down to Bangaloreans’ prayers. Whatever it was, Bangalore was soaked on Friday night, when sudden showers lashed the City taking evening strollers by surprise.

Heralding an end to the excessively high temperatures over the last month, the summer showers measuring 11 mm were witnessed in different parts of the City for a couple of hours, starting just after 9 pm. Airport area recorded rainfall of 14.4 mm.
The rain was caused by an upper trough running from Chattisgarh to Kerala. According to Met department sources, the convective activity, typical in this season, also contributed to the rain.

But Bangaloreans, unconcerned about scientific explanations, took this welcome break from the sweltering heat by hitting the streets. Working professionals on their way home took an impromptu break by getting drenched. “I have been desperately wishing for rains for the last few days. The City had become so hot, now these showers will cool it down,” said Vinod, a marketing executive working at M G Road. The rains, however, raised concerns among cricket lovers about the forthcoming Indo-Pak test match scheduled for the end of the month.

Tree fall
Though it has been cloudy over the last two days, Friday’s was the first shower of 2005. It drastically brought down temperatures by several degrees, besides bringing down one tree in Mahalakshmi Layout in Rajajinagar. Fortunately, the latter did not cause any casualty.
