Road widening: Massive tree felling on the anvil

ROAD-WIDENING
Trees face axe effect

The Times of India

Bangalore: The life of roadside trees in the city seems to be getting shorter, thanks to road-widening work to ease traffic congestion.
On Friday, some people chopped trees off Lower Agaram Road allegedly at the behest the BCC’s horticulture department. The road, which had about 25 trees, will now witness public bearing the scorching sun. The trees will be cut down on Residency Road, M.G. Road and in Koramangala too, the contractor said.

Although the van parked to carry logs of wood was a private one, it was stuck with an “on duty’’ label of BDA. The contractor maintained this is done to escape the “harassment” by the police.

When contacted, the horticulture department superintendent said: “We have orders for the trees to be cut so that roads would be widened.’’ He did not elaborate.
