BDA on Peripheral Ring Road plans
‘There will be no signals on the peripheral Ring Road’
The Times of India
Will the proposed peripheral Ring Road decongest traffic within the city?
Absolutely. This is not only because the tourist and transport vehicles moving from one point to another need not pass through the city, but also a lot of transport and goods related businesses will be shifted outside. Even the parking of these vehicles within the city will not be there.
The outer Ring Road, which was once mostly signal-free, now is dotted with them. Will there be signals on the peripheral Ring Road too?
No. There will be no signals on the peripheral Ring Road. It has been conceived with underpasses and 12 radial roads, so there’s no stopping of traffic. Also the signals are put up on requests from the public and advice from the traffic personnel. If the peripheral Ring Road decongests traffic on the outer Ring Road, then some signals may be removed.
Will you also be acquiring land on either side of the new road for development?
Yes. We will be acquiring 200 metres of land on either side of the road. We plan to have a green belt along the 108 kilometres track and pack it with thick vegetation. There may also be requests for bus depots and other civic amenities, for which we may acquire more land.
When is the peripheral Ring Road likely to be completed?
Tendering and land acquisition will happen simultaneously. By November 2005 the work on the Ring Road will start. Two years from November, the work will be completed.
