BANGALORE: It’s time to get the sweaters out. Winter is round the corner and there is a nip in the morning air. The mercury drops, cold bites.

With the north-east monsoon almost drawing to a close, day and night temperatures are likely to drop ushering in this year’s winter. The season is likely to begin by the second week of of this month, latest by November 20, according to the Director of the Meteorological Department A.L. Koppar.

The significant phenomenon signalling the arrival of the season is the shift from the current moisture-bearing Easterly winds to the cold and dry Northerly winds.

‘‘This crucial change is just around the corner. The North winds will envelop Karnataka in no more than ten days resulting in a dip in day and night temperatures. This is when people begin to experience chapped skin and lips because the air, though cold, has no moisture’’ he added.

Koppar said during this season, Bangalore’s day temperature will hover around 26-27 degree Celsius. But night temperature may on occasion, drop significantly to as low as 11-12 degree Celsius.

The current north-east monsoon has already begun its exit moving westward over the Arabian Sea causing rain over the coastal part of the State. It will be gone by mid-November making way for winter.
