Bangalore: Those finding it difficult to park their four-wheelers in the bustling Majestic area, KG Road or BVK Iyengar Road, can heave a sigh of relief as the dream project of the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BMP), to offer a multi-level car parking under one roof on the KG Road, will soon become a reality.

The facility, called the Kempegowda Maharaja Complex, is being constructed by the Maharaja Builders & Developers Pvt Ltd at a cost of Rs 7.52 crore. The first in the area, the facility is expected to ease the traffic congestion. This five-storey facility, with provision to park cars in the basement too, is coming up opposite the Kempegowda and Sagar theatres and at the intersection of BVK Iyengar Road.

The earlier scheduled date for the completion of the project was October 2004, but it was delayed by more than two months due to the change in its design. Earlier, the BMP wanted to house a basement+ ground+ six floors. Later, it was trimmed to basement+ ground+four floors. As these changes called for a change in the foundation, Maharaja Builders had to redo the structural planning. This delayed the commencement of work from July to September 2003.

“Good, they told us before commencing the excavation work, otherwise, we would have been in deep trouble,” said a site engineer. As on date, the building can accommodate a total of 400 cars in the basement and second, third, fourth floors and the terrace. The cars can be taken up to the terrace with the help of a ramp.
The ground floor is reserved for 100 shops, mainly for jewelers and textile manufacturers and the first floor will be used as office space by the BMP.

“This building has been constructed as per the sanction plan and there is no violation. We were given nine months to complete it. Due to the delay of two months in finalising the plan, the entire project got held up. After obtaining the Occupation Certificate, we will hand over the portions to the new owners. Meanwhile, we have also made provisions for constructing the fifth and sixth floor, in case there is need for them in the future," said BMP engineer-in-chief, Rame Gowda.

“Even today, people are unofficially parking their cars in the complex. We are just awaiting the completion of the formalities to officially throw it open to the public. The builders have to hand over the building and thereafter, we have to sign an agreement. We don't foresee any problem and this facility can be used within a month's time,” he said.
