Bangalore: There were flash floods in parts of BTM Layout and on Hosur road after the Madivala Lake overflowed on Saturday afternoon. The lake overflowed as the catchment area of the lake has been receiving heavy rain for the last one week.

The spill over resulted in flooding of Bank Officers’ Layout in BTM Layout, Central Silk Board junction on Hosur Road, following which the roads had nearly three to four feet water. The flooding also resulted in traffic jam. Residents were stranded in houses for several hours and sewers got clogged. People had to wade through waist deep water to reach their homes.

According to Govindaraj, BCC assistant executive engineer of Madivala, the catchment area of Madivala lake which is five to six kms away, has received heavy rain. The deluge from the overflowing lake could not be accommodated in the storm water drains. The storm water drains were also chocked.

Low-lying areas badly affected

All hell broke loose for residents of low-lying areas, with Friday’s heavy rain submerging many of the localities.

The Met office recorded 40.7 mm rainfall in the city and 70 mm in the airport. Several trees were uprooted in and around areas like M.G. Road, St John’s Hospital Road, Malleswaram, Domlur and Austin Town. Houses in HAL III stage and BTM II stage which are built on the drain bed were flooded. Manholes were opened and sewage flowed into houses along with the rain water.
