Bangalore: Creation and maintenance of parks has become a big business for the BCC, BJP legislator R. Ashok alleged on Monday.
At a discussion in the Assembly on grants, Ashok said: “They claim to have bought trees at Rs 3,000 each, with each park containing 15-20 such trees. But they are not huge trees, they look like little palm trees. Nearly Rs 1.5 to Rs 2 crore is spent on each park.’’

Ashok said the BCC has also flouted rules and violated the Transparency Act. “Last year it undertook Rs 2-crore work on a park adjoining Sankey Tank. This year, it is spending Rs 80 lakh without calling for tenders,’’ he said.

Ashok accused the BCC of frauding citizens on the pretext of creating and maintaining parks. “Annually, it spends nearly Rs 150 crore, but there is nothing to show for it,’’ he said.
