BANGALORE: To improve water supply in core areas of the city, the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) is rejuvenating all the dilapidated Ground-Level Reservoirs (GLRs).
“Constructing new GLRs is expensive and time consuming. Moreover, if the existing GLRs are rejuvenated, we will be saving space. We will be allocating time-bound works to ensure that the GLRs are rejuvenated at the earliest,” said BWSSB chairman P B Ramamurthy.
Through these works, the BWSSB is aiming to control the “unaccounted for” water leakage. The water board has given a contract of Rs 1.44 crore to rejuvenate the defunct GLR at West of Chord Road, whose capacity is nine million litres. It has also given contracts worth Rs 2.03 crore to rejuvenate two GLRs, of 13.2 million litre capacity, at Malleswaram. The reservoirs in Malleswaram are among the oldest in the city. The BWSSB is in the process of inviting tenders for rejuvenating the GLR at Machlibetta.
There are 56 GLRs in the city and eight of them are defunct. The BWSSB is conducting a survey on 15 dilapidated GLRs to explore the various techniques it can use to rejuvenate each GLR. Six of these 15 GLRs are defunct since many years.
Besides rejuvenation work, the BWSSB has issued contracts to construct six new GLRs in Cauvery IV Stage II Phase. The work is expected to be completed by the end of 2011.
