BMTC's K buses to help commuters travel on the busy Inner Ring Road in comfort

After the Big-10, now it is the Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation's (BMTC) K buses that are all set to usher change on Bangalore roads.

The K buses, where K stands for Konnect, will ply on the Inner Ring Road on the lines of Big-10 buses that run on the city's Outer Ring Road.

"The city will soon have K-buses," explained Sampangi Ramgowda, divisional traffic officer, BMTC. "This will add to the existing services and help working professionals commute on the Ring Road."

Initially, the BMTC will run 30 buses during the trial run. The number of buses will be increased gradually in phases

K1, K2, K3...

Both the ring roads are established IT corridors in the city.

"These buses to be called as K1, K2, K3 will ply on the stretches of the Inner Ring Road. Initially, we will run 30 buses in the trial run and gradually increase the number of buses in planned phases.

Currently, there is a bus every 15 minutes. By the time the service is formally launched, we hope to cut the interval between two buses to five minutes," said Ramgowda.

While K1 series will ply from St Johns to Yeshwantpur-via-Domlur, Trinity Circle, Indian Express and Mekhri Circle, K2 buses will ply from Chikkamaranhalli to MCTC via Yeshvantapur, Iskcon, Shankarmutt and Vijayanagar.

K3 series of buses will ply from Vijayanagar to Koramangla via MCTC, Chamrajpet, Jayanagar bus stand, Carmel Convent and Dairy Circle.

However, the K series will not sport a unique colour scheme unlike other services such as the Atal Sarige service.

The BMTC hopes to attract software professionals to the service and decongest the IT corridors.

"There is a considerable change in attitude these days, thanks to Bus Day and other initiatives to popularise public transport that followed," said S Basavraj, a commuter in ring road connecting Indiranagar.

"We hope that the forthcoming initiative will reduce traffic further and pollution as many like me have already started using public transport."

BMTC Bus Day
The BMTC Bus Day, which is powered by MiD DAY and Radio One, will be celebrated on June 4. Bannerghatta Road, Hosur Road, Sarjapur Road, Old Airport Road to ITPB and Old Madras Road will ply additional buses.
