The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is planning to build a multi-level parking complex on a six-acre plot abutting the Freedom Park.
"In the busy Majestic and surrounding areas, parking is a big headache," R Ashok, the minister in charge of Bangalore city, said. "We are giving this parking project top priority. This will end parking woes in the area," he said. "We will construct five more mega multi-level parking complexes in the city. We will start work on three of them soon."
The BBMP will hand over land for the parking complex to the Bangalore Development Authority (BDA). "The BDA has come forward to build the complex. Each complex will have parking slots for about 5,000 cars and two-wheelers. After constructing the complex, the BDA will hand it over to the BBMP, and the Palike will be in charge of its maintenance," Ashok said.
Ashok said the state was considering increasing the number of standing committees in the BBMP. The urban development department had already sent a proposal for increasing the number of standing committees, he said.
The BBMP currently has eight standing committees with seven members each. "The number will be raised to 12 with each of them having 11 members. The proposal will be discussed in Thursday's cabinet meeting," he said. "After approving the increase in the number of standing committees, the government will issue an ordinance. We will then send the proposal to the governor for his sanction." After obtaining the governor's nod, the government would conduct elections to select the committee members, he said.
