Bengalureans are having to put up with a lot of inconvenience while the city gets a makeover to deal with its rising population and growing traffic. While work on the Metro rail is leading to chaos in some parts, widening of the Mysore Road, specially the stretch between Chamarajpet and Nayandahalli, into a six-lane, is causing its own share of problems, which are likely to haunt the people for the next 18 months, until the project is completed.
While digging up of utilities has made the road narrower and damaged footpaths, branches of trees axed to widen the road , are often left abandoned on pavements in Azadnagar and elsewhere, complains Mr Purushottam, who lives in the area.
He fears the monsoon may worsen the situation as rain water will most likely fill up in the dug up
portion of the road, making things not just difficult but dangerous for motorists.
"Although there is often chaos on the roads, no policeman has been posted here to regulate the heavy traffic. Pedestrians who find that the footpath has been either demol ished or occupied by branches, are forced to walk on the road, which is already narrow from the shfiting of utilities,” the residents lament, appealing to the BBMP and the traffic police to provide an alternative route for use of vehicles for the duration of the project. BBMP chief engineer (major roads) K N Chikkarayappa says the work order for widening the road into six lanes will be issued by the month end.
The work is supposed to be completed within 18 months. "The survey has already been done and utilities are being shifted.
Trees on either side of the road will be cleared after receiving the required permission from the BBMP forest division.
Some buildings too will have to be demolished to make way for the widening of the road," he explains.
