BBMP fails to practise what it preaches

Palike violates building bye-laws for new office

The Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), which keeps an eye on building bye-law violations in the city, has violated its own norms. The best part: The violation happens to be in its own premises, at the corporation's head office located on NR Road.
An eight-storeyed new building, which is being constructed inside the BBMP premises, does not have basement parking. This is mandatory for any multi-storeyed building as per the BBMP building bye-laws.
Any building elsewhere, if it were to be constructed in this manner, would have invited demolition orders by now.
The building has only stilts on the ground floor and can accommodate 27 four-wheelers. There could be a serious parking problem, especially on days when council meetings are held. There is already a lack of parking space for 198 newly-elected corporators.
Now, this building would create a further parking crunch. This is because each floor of the building is of 7, 500 square feet area and can accommodate 60 employees on each of the five floors that would be used as offices. The seventh floor will have auditoriums.
