A new mall has become a bone of contention between police and commuters in Malleshwaram.
Motorists heading to Sampige Road were surprised to know that entry has been barred and they would have to travel an extra mile to reach Seshadripuram. Police attribute the sudden increase in volume of traffic on Sampige Road to the opening of a mall last week.

The narrow road, say traffic experts, cannot handle the heavy traffic moving towards the mall.

A police officer from the traffic division (West) said Milk Corner Road which meets Sampige Road will be made a one-way during peak hours to avoid congestion on Sampige Road. “The diversion was enforced on Sunday on a trial basis and from Monday we shall divert the traffic between 5 pm and 8 pm,” he said.

Vehicles which go via Srirampura Railway Under Bridge to reach Sampige Road will now have to turn left and reach Malleshwaram Underpass Road near KC General Hospital.

“BMTC officials have been requested to regularise bus halts in designated places but often drivers end up blocking the traffic. Autorickshaws which congest the bus stand area also need to be parked somewhere else,” the officer added.

Additional commissioner of police Pravin Sood said parking on the stretch between Sampige Road and Malleshwaram underpass will be banned in the future to ease traffic chaos.

“The new mall has ample parking space and we can implement a pay and park system,” he said.
