Bangalore: It’s a treasure hunt with a difference, not for gold or jewels but for water.
‘The Lost Lakes of Bangalore’ project will document Bangalore’s many tanks and lakes which have vanished with urbanization and growth. As part of this project, India Water Portal (IWP) is organizing a contest for people to track Bangalore’s lost glory.
In the 1960s, there were 280 tanks by 1993, less than 80 remained. Now there are only 67 but most are dead. According to IWP, various factors have led to this: several of these lakes have been officially developed by the government into layouts and several have been encroached by slums and private parties.
Many may not be aware that the Majestic bus station and Kanteerava Stadium were once tanks. The contest is to create a short film (up to 10 minutes) which documents any lost lake anywhere in the city. The documentation can be in the form of interviews with people, photos, video clippings or old footage of lakes.
The film could also investigate the story of how the lake was earlier and how people around related to it, the circumstances that resulted in it vanishing, and current state. The films must be in either English or Kannada. The films will be uploaded on a video site.
CONTEST INFORMATION Student category: Open to all full-time students of schools or Bachelor’s degree or similar courses. Participants can work in teams of up to five General category: Open to all. They can participate in teams of five. Prizes: Winning team in student category gets Rs 15,000 Winning team in general category gets Rs 15,000. All entries meeting a minimum quality standard get Rs 1,000 each and a certificate
