Bangalore: Like in the rest of the city, there is much in Bangalore West that irk the tempers of residents and lead to many protests and angry letters to the authorities. With the BBMP elections just a month away, resident welfare associations in Bangalore West give their wish-lists and suggestions to improve their areas.

Various agencies should coordinate
There should be coordination between various civic agencies — like the engineering department, the BWSSB, B E S C O M , tele phone and health department. Help citizens get various paperwork done, including getting their names on the voters’ lists, ration cards, pensions and paying their bills.
Make sure the area is clean with proper garbage collection after segregation at source so that most of the waste is recycled. This will not only result in a huge improvement in the general cleanliness of the ward, but also get rid of stray dogs and reduce other health hazards. This will help generate employment and income from something that is currently a huge problem and creates much expenditure.
Also, public toilets should be cleaned and used so as to not dirty the surroundings which is a health hazard again. Citizens should take decisions on what civic works should be taken up in the ward and the budget should be transparent. The quality of the work should be monitored by the citizens as their involvement is most important.

Ensure there are more trees We are trying to promote the practice of ‘each one, plant one’ in our area to i n c re a s e g re e n e r y. Authorities should insist that at least two saplings are planted when the plan to build a house is approved.
This will ensure that there are more trees. The number of days whe voter-identification cards are issued should be increased as many people have problems with the voters’ list.
Voting should be made compulsory to ensure more citizen participation. Some borewells have dried up in this area. The authorities should ensure there is a separate line for water supply to parks. The idea of ‘Hasire Usiru’ should be promoted.

VIP movement troubles traffic The biggest problem residents face at Kumara Park, which is very posh with most civic amenities under control, is the traffic situation, especially parking. Many houses have at least a couple of cars each and residents park them on both sides of the road.
Students overspeed on the narrow roads on their twowheelers. This area comes under the High Grounds police station limits. A lot of ministers and VIPs live here and all the state guests stay here.
The traffic police are too busy looking after VIP movement. We want the commissioner to have a separate set of officers to monitor VIP movement so that the police can also look after the problems residents face.

Needed: an available representative
We want a representative who will be available at all times. It can be any political party, but the candidate should be accessible to us and must be fam i l i a r with our a re a . Something needs to be done with the vacant sites where parthenium grows, there are snakes and garbage here.
Also we want better maintenance of parks. The pourakarmikas come to collect money regularly at the beginning of the month, but they don’t collect the garbage every day.
There should be better maintenance of roads and streetlights.
