Richmond Town to be garbage- free zone
G Manjusainath, Bangalore, Nov 11, DH News Service:
The Richmond Town ward will soon turn into a garbage-free zone. Faced with a lot of criticism, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has finally decided to give this prestigious area a facelift.
The showpiece of modern Bangalore--the area covering M G Road, Brigade Road, Church Street, Richmond Road, Residency Road etc --hardly have any dustbins. Visitors to these places are left with no choice but to throw litter on the street. Garbage often piles up here as a result.
In the initial stage of the project, the BBMP has selected M G Road, Vidhana Soudha, Church Street, Mayo Hall, Brigade Road, St Marks Road, Lavelle Road, Richmond Road, Residency Road and Magrath Road. The Palike will install 75 garbage bins in these areas at a cost of about Rs 2.62 lakh.
The BBMP also plans to hire four garbage lifting vehicles, two lorries and 20 sanitary workers to keep the area clean. “Every month, we will spend around Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh to keep these areas clean. We will hire some 15-20 workers. They will work in two shifts - from 6 am to 2 pm and from 2 pm to 10 pm, said H C Jayachandra, Chief Engineer, Bangalore East Zone.
