Work in progress, but citizens want more

Work in progress, but citizens want more
Bangalore:

A few decades ago, an ITC employee saw water in his borewell at KR Puram as a major source of income. His idea clicked and he made a fortune out of the acute water scarcity in this area.

Today, the retired ITC employee is still making money but the residents continue to confront water scarcity. There are many more borewells in the area now, and water is being supplied through the CMC water lines although the service is often not regular in some
areas. Asphalted roads are the most visible signs of change in the KR Puram constituency, a year after the Deccan Herald-Prajavani “Janaspandana” programme. At Kote Devasthana Road, the underground drains are being laid while asphalting is in progress on College Road, Ramakrishna Layout, Shastrinagar, Annasandrapalya and other pockets.

Residents are also now asking the civic authorities to take care of the water bodies, since the fast depleting ground water table has emerged as an area of concern. KR Puram is one of the areas of Bangalore, which is blessed with good number of lakes. Yet encroachment is spoiling the beauty and the expanse of the water bodies.

Another major grievance of the residents is the encroachment of roads and major drains of the area. KR Puram constituency MLA Nandeesh Reddy wants to work with the residents to save the water bodies and freeing roads and drains from encroachments. Going by the claims made by Reddy, KR Puram should emerge as a clean area in the next three years as he has assured the entire constituency an underground drainage system.
