The Urban Development Department (UDD) has received 1,184 applications for the draft notification called for the newly carved wards in the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) jurisdiction. The final notification is likely to be issued by July 10. The BBMP had set June 30 as the deadline for the public to file its objections and suggestions regarding the new wards. Out of the total received applications, 603 were submitted to the Palike in a written format and 581 applications were filed online.
These applications include both objections and suggestions of the public regarding the new wards that have been proposed.
"Of the 581 applications received through the website, at least 135 applications suggested inclusion of areas into a particular ward and 102 suggested deletion of names from a given ward. We have received 126 suggestions for changing the names of wards," said the Urban DC, GN Nayak.
Nayak added that these observations would be sent to the government within four to five days. "The final notification will tentatively be issued by July 10," he said.
The state government on June 17, 2009, issued a draft notification increasing the number of wards of the BBMP to 198 from 147. An amendment to section 7(1)(a) of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act 1976 allows the BBMP to delimit wards to a maximum number of 200. Each reconstituted ward has an approximate population of 25,000 to 30,000.
