Bengaluru, July 12: Power-guzzling Brigade Road has turned thrifty with energy.
A pilot project by Bescom and an NGO headed by advisor to CM on urban affairs A. Ravindra to bring down energy consumption in Bengaluru’s Central Business District, including Brigade Road, has seen a saving of 30 per cent on the average amount of power consumed by establishments in the area in the past two months.
Bescom officials said the project helped spread awareness about the power crisis in the state and methods for sustainable power use.
Establishments in the locality have in the past 60 days reduced the use of air-conditioning, electric displays and neon lights, bringing down their electricity bills and saving a significant amount of power. “We have met with the owners of 1,750 commercial establishments and asked them not to use lights when it is not necessary,” a senior Bescom official said.
“The store owners and staff are being given energy saving tips,” the official said. Bescom is likely to extend the project to other parts of the city. “Establishments on Commercial Street, in Frazer Town, Koramangala, Jayangar 4th Block and Bannerghatta Road consume a lot of power. The project will be implanted in these places too,” the official said.
Brigade Road Shops and Establishments Association secretary Suhail Yusuff pointed out that the energy saving initiative was most successful on Brigade Road. “Shops that paid monthly electricity bills of Rs 30,000 now get bills for Rs 20,000,” he said. Circulars were sent to the 127 establishments on Brigade Road.
