Welcome 198 wards
Welcome 198 wards
Average Population 30,000; Each Assembly Segment Gets 1-9 Wards
TIMES NEWS NETWORK
Bangalore: After much anticipation and some delay, Bangalore’s new wards were notified on Wednesday, throwing up some interesting facts. Delimited Bangalore, for example, will have two Puttenahallis as wards — at two extreme ends. One in the north, Ward 2, and another in the south, the flood-prone Puttenahalli Ward 187!
Even though there is speculation that procedural delays, particularly with regard to reservation in the 198 wards, might push the BBMP election beyond the stipulated July 31 deadline, it is time for Bangaloreans to get familiar with some of the new wards: GKVK, RMV II Stage, Subhashnagar, Bangalore University, Jayanagar 9th block, Jakkur, Jayanagar 5th block, Hosakerehalli, Ullalu, Uttarahalli, Hemmigepura, Vasantapura and Bilekahalli.
The 28 assembly segments of Bangalore will have wards ranging from 1 to 9 per constituency, but there is slight overlapping too. Even Anekal assembly segment, which falls under Bangalore Rural, has one ward under it: 191, Singasandra. Incidentally, some areas of the same ward also fall under the Bangalore South and Bommanahalli assembly segments.
The draft notification put out by the urban development secretariat listing the new wards of the Greater Bangalore, spread over roughly 800 sq km, has a majority of the smaller residential extensions as fullfledged wards. A large number of areas that come under the newly added seven CMCs, one TMC and 110 villages have been converted into wards which are situated in the city periphery.
The 2001 census was the basis of the delimitation process. A ward has an average population of 30,000 (plus or minus 20%) in the core areas; wards in newly added peripheral areas have a minimum population of 20,000.
For instance, some of the smaller wards are T Dasarahalli, Jalahalli, JC Nagar, Lingarajpura, Subedharpalya, Prakashnagar. The Big Brothers are Uttarahalli — formerly the biggest assembly segment in India — Bangalore University, Jakkur and Bellandur.
The notification has listed the wards, major localities coming under them, and their boundaries. The information will be uploaded to the BBMP website and will also be available at the office of the deputy commissioner, Bangalore Urban, for people to send in their suggestions/objections within June 30.
In the coming days, a web-enabled GIS database of draft delimitation will be hosted for people to browse through. The urban development department will shortly put out details about migration of wards after the delimitation process, boundaries vis-a-vis the old ones, the new wards within an assembly constituency, and how localities have been regrouped.
