Bruhat Ben-galuru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is responsible for maintaining streelights, but they say that they cannot keep streets illuminated during load-shedding.
The solution lies partly in using solar lights that don’t rely on electricity, but this concept is just developing in the city and very few localities have them at present.

Frequent power cuts are affecting commuters and pedestrians in the city. Motorists say that they are unable to see unscientific speedbreakers especially when streetlights are not on and pedestrians complain that walking on such streets is dangerous for them.

But BBMP says they are not responsible for the grim situation.

BBMP executive engineer, south, electrical department, Srinath said, “Due to the power cuts, streetlights do not work at night in many localities. BBMP can’t do anything.

Moreover, solar lights are erected only at very few places. Most streetlights depend on electricity to function,” he said.

“The concept of solar streetlights is still at research and development stage, it will take time for this concept to be implemented in the city due to various reasons,” said Mr Srinath.

Officials said due to the ongoing Metro Rail work on RV Road, streetlights do not function properly. “The poles are being set up on the pavements on RV Road by Metro Rail officials. It will take a few days for work to be completed and the streets illuminated,” he added.
