BANGALORE: As part of its enduring solutions for better traffic management, the Bangalore city traffic police is planning to convert one-way roads that are being widened, into two-way. The initiative is being undertaken by the traffic police to bring in lane discipline among the motorists.
The first road where the change will be effected in a month’s time on an experimental basis is the stretch between Krupanidhi College and Madiwala old checkpost on Sarjapur Road, which was made one-way in 2004.
Speaking to The Express, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic & Security) Praveen Sood said that as Sarjapur Road has been widened by the BBMP, there is enough space to convert traffic on the road to two-way. “This move will check haphazard driving and overspeeding, and bring in lane discipline,” he opined.
Once the stretch is made two-way, it saves about two kilometres for motorists.
That apart, it will also decrease pressure on the inner roads of Koramangala and Madiwala Road.
“Once the road-widening works are completed, logistics have to be attended to, by other supporting departments. For instance, bus stops should be shifted, medians should be put up along the road and extra phases need to be added at signal lights, before the stretch is made twoway,” Sood explained.
He said that if the change is successful and accepted by the public, subsequently two-way would be introduced on Hosur Road as well in six months time, once the road widening works are finished.
“If the experiment is not successful, we will revert to the one-way system. At present, drainage work and shifting of electric poles are going on, on Sarjapur Road,” Sood added.
