BANGALORE: Well-maintained and trimmed lawns with joggers’ path dotted with comfortable benches, flowering trees, tiled walking tracks at the backyard of your house. For the residents of Yelahanka New Town and BBMP Commissioner Dr S Subramanya, this is a fact and way of life.

This strikingly expressive lung space — created, developed and maintained by the BBMP — is the first of its kind in the area.

But all this is in sharp contrast to the developments undertaken by the BBMP in the Yelahanka Old Town.

While certain layouts in the 4th phase and surrounding areas of the Yelahanka New Town create an atmosphere of relaxation, for the residents of Yelahanka Old Town, all this appears to be a mirage. There is not a single decent park developed here.

Th e BBMP men are working on the development of more such backyard parks in the nearby layouts and the work is in progress, they say. The huge park on the Mother Dairy Road in the Yelahanka New Town, has also been developed along with the roadwidening works.

“The work is confined to the New Town and for the residents of Old Town, there are no parks even in front of our houses. All the development works at the New Town must be because of the BBMP Commissioner staying there,” said Omkar, a resident of Yelahanka Old Town.

A senior horticulture official said, “The Yelahanka New Town is the Housing Board area and the Board had reserved lung space about 15 years ago. The development of the parks has been taken up after the formation of BBMP. While work on eight such parks has been completed, work on another 20 is expected to be completed.

Close to Rs 5 crore has been alloted for the development of parks in the area."
