The government has been clear on its stand that no more lakes will be privatized. Appearing on the government’s behalf, the advocate general told the HC that the 15-year lease will not be extended for four lakes that were privatized earlier. “They have already invested Rs 27 crore and are looking after the lake well,” he said.
But the petitioners’ counsel S Siddappa said the Supreme Court has banned commercialization of water bodies. Bangalore-based Environmental Support Group, an NGO, has challenged privatization of Hebbal, Nagawara, Agara and Vengayyana Kere lakes.
