BANGALORE: Visweswarapuram, commonly known as V V Puram, is one of the oldest layouts with a population of about 28,000. It has been named after the then Dewan of Mysore, Visveswaraya.

Areas Visweswarapuram, Shiva Shankar Circle, Minerva Circle, Parvathipuram, Sajjan Rao Circle, Vanivilas Circle, Basavangudi, Arumugam Circle, Kanakanpalya, Jayanagar 2nd Block, Jayanagar 1st Block, Ashoka Pillar Circle and South End Circle.

Landmark and historical sites

It is an area with several temples the Subramanya temple, Shri Lakshmi Venkataswara temple and Valkani temple are a few among them. V B Bakery, Vani Vilas Women’s College earlier known as Maharashtra Mahila Vidyalaya, Sajjan Rao Vidya Mandir (school for the handicapped), V V Puram College and KIMS Hospital are some of the landmarks in V V Puram. Of recent, the Market Road (Food Street), which provides both South Indian and North Indian food has become the main hangout of everyone.

Ward woes

Sanitation problem: The area has been facing major sanitation issues. Garbage clearance is also not properly done.

Water is supplied only on alternate days. “A public urinal facility is a major need for the residents. Though we got one constructed through the MP’s fund, it is not enough. We need two or three such public urinals in the area,” said, B S Mani, Secretary, V V Puram Residents’ Welfare Association.

Many bureaucrats are residents of V V Puram so they can take the trouble to bring development to the area, but they don’t seem to be doing anything, he said.

Cow street

On Parvatipuram 2nd Main, one is welcomed by cattle and cow dung on both sides of the lane.

Also seen is an open manhole.

“When we were small we used to play cricket in this lane (Parvatipuram, 2nd Main) but people leave their cows on both sides of the lane. It looks like a cow street now,” said a resident.

Former mayor and corporator says

However P R Ramesh, former mayor and corporator, V V Puram, said that, earlier people had plenty of complaints regarding water, sanitation and bad roads. Now all roads are fixed with concrete. That apart, street lights in the area are efficient and parks are well-developed, he said.
