Fog hits flight arrivals at BIA

Bangalore: Many flights could not land on Thursday due to a dense fog at the Bangalore International Airport.
A BIA spokesperson said: “There were no arrivals for three hours between 5.30 am and 8.30 am. There were only three departures from BIA on Thursday. Two flights, one from Mumbai and the other from London, had to be diverted owing to the fog.”
According to A Muthuchami, director, meteorological department, temperature usually decreases with height, but at 5.30 am, the temperature was 20o C, and at 1.5 km above the sea surface, it was 23o C.
“Due to this inversion in temperature and the absence of winds, the weather was static for some time on Thursday morning,” Muthuchami said. “Since we had a clear sky on Wednesday, it was an ideal atmosphere for fog to be formed. This is not unusual during the North-East Monsoon season,” he said.
