BANGALORE: The Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) is all set to launch work on formation of Suryanagar II Stage layout on Hosur Road.

Spread over an area of 600 acres, the layout will offer 12,000 30ftx40ft and 40ftx60ft residential sites. Farmers too have a reason to cheer that they are being offered market prices for their lands under acquisition.

Most of the lands needed for the layout had already been acquired two years ago by paying around Rs 35 lakh per acre for farmers. However some farmers had been reluctant to part with their lands, causing a delay in the launching of the work, housing minister Krishnaiah Shetty said here on Wednesday.

The acquisition process would be completed by offering the present market price to the lands of these farmers. A committee headed by the deputy commissioner had been formed to hold direct talks with farmers to negotiate the land price.

Slum lands for pvt developers

Shetty also announced that the government would allow private developers to play a major role in rehabilitation of residents of over 540 slums in Bangalore.

These private developers would be offered the lands in these slums to build multi-storey housing complexes for the slum dwellers and they would also get a portion of the land for commercial exploitation.

Defending the decision to entrust the responsibility of providing housing to the urban poor to private builders, Shetty said the government was not in a position to invest huge amounts needed for housing projects.

"These slum dwellers are living under inhuman conditions. They should be rehabilitated at the earliest. Involvement of private sector is the best way to ensure speedy and quality work without any investment from the government," he said.

Expression of interest would be invited from private developers for rehabilitation of over 540 slums very soon on the lines of Eejipura EWS quarters being developed by Maverick Holdings. Similar project ts would be taken up in the slums of Mysore, Hubli and Dharwad too.

Replying to queries on the Ashraya Scheme, the minister said about 2 lakh houses would be allotted in the current year. The deputy commissioners have been asked the send the list of beneficiaries before December 31. The state government would fulfill its promise of providing 15 lakh houses to the poor in five years, he said.
