If your knowledge of traffic signage is a little fuzzy, the city police will be glad to give you an update.

The traffic police is implementing a programme to upgrade all signboards and educate motorists about traffic signage.

About 1,000 old signboards have been removed in the city in just three days.

In their place there will soon be signboards with 3M reflective sheets.

“We found that signboards at major junctions were either substandard or being misused. The department had invited tenders to install signboards and the work has already begun. By the end of August, at least 10,000 signboards will be removed and new ones will be put in place,” additional commissioner of police (traffic) Praveen Sood said.

“In fact, by August, the city will have 224 signal lights and 50,000 signboards will be required,” Mr Sood added.

The department has received several complaints about improper signage at various junctions and some motorists blame faulty signboards for traffic violations, police officers say.

“Standardised signboards help motorists maintain road discipline. Most motorists can’t even identify no-parking and no-stopping signs. Our own staff was recently trained in signage standardised by the Indian Road Congress. In the last six months, 54,000 motorists have been booked for driving on no-entry roads. Striking signboards will help reduce traffic vio lations and make enforcement foolproof. “Once the new signboards are in place, we will hold awareness programmes so signboards are not abused. The tying of banners to sign boards will also be stopped,” he said.

The traffic cops are also planning a project to install new direction boards to replace dilapidated ones.

“The direction boards are in bad shape. Under this project, Rs 3 crore will be spent on direction boards at major junctions in the city,” Mr Sood said.
