: The Women and Child Welfare department has squarely blamed the private contractors running the amusement park for the tragedy that befell Ayesha Razak and her three-yearold daughter Namra at Bal Bhavan on Monday.
Officials said the government had asked the contractors to shut down the operations in the park on Sunday.
The women and child welfare department had leased out the amusement area in Bal Bhavan complex to Fun Style Amusements in January 2008 and the private player had installed 12 rides.
The company was instructed to dismantle nine rides, including the ill-fated carousel or merry-go-round for safety reasons and was asked to continue with three rides in a letter dispatched on June 13.
But the company refused to do so, stating that they had already invested Rs 30 lakh.
According to officials at the welfare department, the private player even ignored the final warning from the department to shut down the rides on June 29.
On June 30, it was a holiday for Bal Bhavan and the amusement park contractors kept the park open for public.
Shalini Rajaneesh, secretary, Women and Child Welfare department said: “There is age restriction, but when adults are around, children also hop on to the ride. An inquiry will be conducted in this regard.”
