BANGALORE: On Tuesday night saw heavy rains in the city: the second highest ever this season, at 63.8 mm of rain.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department, when a city receives 35-65 mm of rain on a single day, it is “rather heavy rainfall”.
The City Meteorological Department (CMD) recorded 63.8 mm rainfall, and HAL Airport recorded 30.6 mm. CMD Director-in-charge Dr A Muthuchami said that during the revival of the monsoon, thundershowers and lightning are common phenomena. This is likely to continue for the next couple of days: “For the next two days, the City will receive rainfall between 44 mms to 65 mms in the evening hours, after which the clouds will move north and towards coastal Karnataka. The monsoon is back in South India after a gap of over two weeks.”
Westerly winds are likely to prevail over south interior Karnataka in a couple of days, leading to heavy rainfall in north interior and coastal Karnataka. Muthuchami said that the wind speed is presently around five knots (one knot is equal to 1.85 kms per hour).
Strong winds will soon prevail over south interior Karnataka, including Bangalore, measuring upto 20-25 km per hour.
This situation is similar to the one that obtained at the onset of south west monsoon (June). The City Meteorological Department on June 1 recorded the highest rainfall of the year 2008, at 65.6 mm.
The average normal rainfall for July is 110.2 mm. Variations upto 19 per cent, depending on changing parameters, are a common phenomena during the monsoons, said a senior meteorological department officer.
