BANGALORE: Techies are normally considered to be work-centric and socially dormant.

However, proving the notion wrong, a different brand of techies have come out with creative ideas to help the city with its age-old problem of traffic congestion.

To campaign for road traffic regulations and to make the general public aware, some software engineers working in Dell, NetApp, IBM, Fidelity,Misys, LG, Yahoo, Sasken, Sony, Novellus, Covansys and Embassy Group situated in EGL complex and Maruthi Infotech complex in Koramangala have volunteered to form 'People For a Cause' (PFC), supported by Bangalore City Traffic Police.

The group wishes to popularise concepts like 'Car Pooling' through a website called commuteeasy.com which allows the user to pick driving partners.

During the campaign, the techies will distribute leaflets, display banners with road safety measures and popularise the 'smilingdriver' concept, a campaign to encourage motorists to be friendly, follow lane discipline and be tolerant towards other motorists.

The City Traffic Police are eager to extend this programme in areas wherever interested groups come forward to co-operate with the Traffic Police to campaign and to make people follow the traffic regulations.

A team of traffic officers under the supervision of Seemant Kumar Singh, Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic East, Bangalore City, M B Mallikarjuna Swamy, ACP, Traffic East Sub-Division and A B Sudhakar, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Traffic Adugodi Sub-Division, will be coordinating with the group and explore the possibility of extending this programme in other areas of the city.
