IT professionals, residents join hands to save City
DH News Service, Bangalore:
It was an unusual Saturday for some IT professionals who took to the streets with members of the BTM Layout Residents’ Association, on a campaign to save Bangalore.
With a slogan, “Arise! Awake! And its time we stood up!”, the techies, with the residents of BTM Layout took out a rally from the Vigneshwara Temple at 27th Main to the Park behind the KPTCL office on Saturday evening. The drizzle did not dampen their spirits. Holding placards and raising slogans, the group demanded that the government bring in place a proper garbage collection and disposal system. There should also be proper care for lakes, and city’s greenery should be protected, they said.
“Under the pretext of various infrastructural projects, the administration is mowing down old trees of the city, which at any cost cannot be tolerated, and we will protest it vehemently,” said Sukin Raghunathan of Xpressions Unlimited.
President of BTM Layout Welfare Association B Narayana Swamy and vice president K Nagesh Rao said THAT BTM Layout is gradually becoming a garbage dump yard.
BTM Layout MLA Ramalinga Reddy and a cricketer led the rally.
Similar cause
Jeewan Kumar Jyoti, who hails from Bihar, is also fighting for the same cause. “I am from Bihar but I love this city the most. I can’t see the city dying. The lakes are becoming garbage bins and gradually falling prey to the land mafia,” he says.
Jyoti had single-handedly launched a movement to save the lakes. Now, his efforts are reaping benefits, with a number of people joining him. “I will spread this movement across the city and whoever wants to fight for the cause can join me,” he adds.
Techies for road safety
Now it’s time for techies to create safety awareness among road users. Some software engineers working in Dell, NetApp, IBM, Fidelity, Misys, LG, Yahoo, Sasken, Sony, Novellus, Covansys and the Embassy Group have formed ‘People For a Cause’ (PFC), a group supported by the Bangalore City Traffic Police, to create awareness about the importance of following traffic regulations.
Bangalore City Traffic Police and PFC members will launch an awareness programme, ‘Together we can, and together we will make a difference’ on June 16. They will distribute leaflets, and display banners containing road safety measures, and display CDs at cafeteria and recreation centres in software companies.
A team of traffic police under the supervision of Seemanth Kumar Singh, DCP (East Traffic), M B Mallikarjun Swamy, ACP (East Traffic) and A B Sudhakar, ACP (Adugodi traffic sub-division) will coordinate the programme.
