Bangalore: BBMP officials soldiered ahead on Monday, with work on the magic box underpass proceeding on a war footing.
Nine elements were placed by 5 pm. The remaining eleven will be in place by Tuesday evening.
Other work like levelling of the excavated portion where the elements will be arranged, plugging of water leakage, soil nailing, drilling and laying of pipes to provide storm-water vents from the underpass to the nearest drain progressed simultaneously.
The man at the helm of affairs, BBMP commissioner S Subramanya, is camping near the site to monitor work. Residents were pleasantly surprised to see the commissioner actively overseeing the work.
However, Subramanya chose to remain tight-lipped about the progress. “I don’t want to comment on progress of work. You can see it after some time. I want work to be in accordance with technical specifications and don’t want to repent later. I may take time, but I’ll do it properly,’’ he said confidently.
Even a Volvo bus will be able to pass easily through the underpass. Elements have been placed in such a way that water does not accumulate, he said.
People from surrounding areas flocked to the spot and interacted with the commissioner.
“Though residents of Sadashivnagar have been inconvenienced for the past five days, they will be thankful to the BBMP if it is completed within the next five days,” said Shyamanna, a senior citizen.
The members of Kumara Park West Residents’ Welfare Association requested the BBMP to build another underpass near Guttahalli.
However, police had a tough time controlling the crowd. Canewielding cops drove bystanders away to help officials carry out the work without any hindrance.
