Demolition work set to begin

Like it or not. This is how the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation (BMRC) would be starting the New Year: Demolitions.

But the “destruction” is only to give the City its most sought after infrastructure: the Metro rail.

And the first building that will be reduced to rubble will be the police quarters on Old Madras Road. The demolition is likely to be done on either January 5 or 6.

“All three existing apartment blocks will be demolished to pave the way for Namma Metro work,” BMRC official sources told Deccan Herald.

BMRC has already awarded the contract to demolish buildings (both public and private) for the project to Binyas Contech Private limited, a City-based structural rehabilitation engineering company. The police quarters used to house 46 families and almost all of them have already vacated the building. These families have been allotted alternative dwellings at Byappanahalli. The quarters is one of the many government properties that BMRC is going to acquire.

By demolishing the quarters, the BMRC will take into its possession around 1.5 acres of land.

This is to construct one of the Metro rail stations in the Reach 1 of the project — the seven-km stretch between Byappanahalli and the Chinnaswamy stadium.

What about private properties? “The demolition of the quarters will be followed by private buildings in the Reach 1. We want to start the demolition work with a government property to convince people that the BMRC is very much on the job,” the sources said.

However, work on pulling down private properties will be taken up after January 15 (after Dhanur Masa) as most people believe that shifting residences during the period is inauspicious, they explained.

“A detailed list of 130 private properties that are being acquired for the project in the Reach 1, has been prepared. The process to distribute compensation has begun. Over a dozen people are likely to receive the compensation cheques in a day or two,” the sources said.

The officials further said that in case of buildings being partially acquired, enough care would be taken not to damage those portions that are not being taken over.

“The portion of the building that has to be demolished, will first be cut using sophisticated equipment. The buildings will be cut in such a way that the residents can continue living in the other portions without any problem,” officials explained.

Any damage to the properties would be restored or compensated for by the BMRC, the officials said.
