Cobbler kiosks to come back soon

Cobbler kiosks to come back soon

Bangalore: The BBMP will set up attractive cobbler kiosks at 10 places to rehabilitate evicted cobblers.
The decision was taken on Monday, following a meeting convened by BBMP commissioner S Subramanya.
In 2005, the BBMP installed 20 cobbler kiosks on pavements across the city to accommodate cobblers who were evicted from KG Road in November 2003.
Kiosks were put up with the support of a private agency on MG Road, Richmond Road, Sankey Road, KG Road, Cunningham Road and Gandhinagar on a pilot basis.
However, some kiosks were left unused, while others were misused. Since some kiosks obstructed pedestrian movement on the footpaths, the high court passed a directive stating: “Pavements are meant for pedestrian movement and no structure should be permitted on them.’’ Zonal joint commissioners and joint commissioner (welfare) have been directed to identify 10 places at BBMP commercial complexes and properties. The number of kiosks will be increased in a phased manner.
