Land acquisition of the order of 8,600 acres and a cost estimate running up to Rs 5,000 crore — sums up the gigantic scale of road works involved in the proposed project to build five townships around Bangalore City.
The estimates on the land to be acquired and the cost involved were the conclusions arrived at by a survey on the alignment for the 776-km road network planned for the township project of the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA). The survey was launched in August. Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy and senior officials connected with planning, urban development and public works on Friday took stock of these findings.
The road network comprises the Satellite Towns Ring Road - STRR (208 km), Intermediate Ring Road - IRR (188 km) Ring road of townships and nearby towns (176 km) and Radial Roads - RR (204 km). A large portion of the network is meant to be a 90-metre corridor accommodating eight-lane traffic and two service roads.
As much as Rs 10 crore may have to be spent on every kilometre of the road, it has been said.
According to the chief minister, the government will soon come out with a time-bound programme spread over six years, for the township project. The STRR will connect Dobbspet, Magadi, Ramanagaram, Kanakapura, Anekal, Hoskote, Devanahalli, Doddaballapur. The work on STRR is tentatively planned to be taken up in four packages as below: Package I - Dobbspet to Devanahalli via Doddaballapur (78 km); Package II- Devanahalli to Hosur via Hoskote (80 km); Package III - Hoskote to Ramanagaram via Anekal and Kanakapura (110 km); Package IV- Kanakapura to Dobbespet via Ramanagaram and Magadi (100 km)
The five townships are to be located at Bidadi and Ramanagaram in Ramanagaram taluk, Solur in Magadi taluk, Sathanur in Kanakapura, and Nandagudi in Hoskote taluk.
DUMP FLYOVERS
Mr Kumaraswamy on Friday opined that flyovers cannot be the answer to the traffic chaos of the City. He directed the officials to expedite the plans on the Inner Core Ring Road and also give priority to underpasses, instead of flyovers, DHNS reports from Bangalore.
