The new Kempegowda tower, which stands tall at Hudson Circle or the Freedom Park at the Old Central Jail premises which plays a reminder to the Freedom Movement, are two of the many ambitious projects which will take a final shape before the ‘Suvarna Bangalore’ celebrations beginning in November. Other projects which will be dedicated to the citizens by Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy on November 2 include the rejuvenated Ulsoor, Sankey and Yediyur lakes, nineteen IT-BT roads, a sky-walk near Maharani’s College and the ‘Suvarna Khata’ scheme.

Suvarna Khata

A new scheme to issue khatas in 30 days (in some cases seven working days) was introduced to curb rampant corruption at the revenue offices. The khata forms will be made available at the office of the Assistant Revenue Officers and Citizen Service Centres. The documents which need to be enclosed are printed behind the application form. One can get a Khata Certificate (KC) by submitting the prescribed form along with certified documents within 30 days, at the counter at which the form was submitted.

Freedom Park

The idea of a Freedom Park was mooted in 2002, to signify freedom from imprisonment and to serve as a lung space at the old Central Jail premises. After a series of discussions, the BMP invited landscape designers from across the country for a ‘national design competition’ to chalk out a plan for the Park. Over the last three years, the project was given a definite shape. Today, a theme park and a well landscaped expanse of 20 acres houses the Old Central Jail cells and barracks. However, the project costing Rs 9 crore will incur an additional cost of Rs 3 crore for the parking lot.

IT-BT roads

At least 19 roads leading to the IT corridor were selected for upgradation on a fast-track basis, after an interface between the government and the industry representatives last year. The work was entrusted to the Karnataka Land Army Corporation with January 2006 as the the deadline. However, it got extended due to problems with the technical specification for asphalting some of the roads and some opposition from the the elected wing of the BMP.

Kempegowda Gopura

The Kempegowda Tower was planned by the Bangalore Mahanagara Palike in 2004, as part of the annual Kempegowda Day celebrations. After hitting many roadblocks, the project is finally complete. The tower stands tall at 60 ft on the traffic island at Hudson Circle and will be a tribute to Kempegowda, who built the four towers in Lalbagh, Kempambudhi tank, Mekhri Circle and Ulsoor in the 16th century.
