LDA calls for survey of 41 lakes in Bangalore

LDA calls for survey of 41 lakes in Bangalore

The Lake Development Authority has asked for a survey and boundary demarcation of as many as 41 lakes in Bangalore Urban District to assess the actual extent of encroachment on them.

The call for the survey comes against the backdrop of the exercise, now under way, by the A T Ramaswamy-headed joint legislature committee (JLC) to identify encroachments on government land. Incidentally, Mr Ramaswamy has recently said the JLC has asked the government to immediately appoint at least 200 surveyors to survey all land holdings of the government in Bangalore urban and rural districts.

“Unless we know the boundaries of a lake, it is difficult to put a figure on the actual extent of encroachment on it”, LDA sources say.

The lakes requiring the survey and boundary demarcation are being identified on the basis of “the extent of human pressure” in their vicinity, they add.

The LDA has written to the Department of Survey Settlement and Land Records with regard to the survey and has significantly noted that the 41 lakes made up just the first list. “We will be asking for survey of many more of them in due course,” the sources say.

They also note that the encroachment of lakes is well-planned.

The waste-weir and the tank-bund are broken gradually to drain out water from the lake; buildings or structures are put up simultaneously as the water level recedes.

It is said the Kaggadasapura lake, inspected by the legislature committee earlier this month, is also in this category.

LDA sources further note that the survey-cum-demarcation would be a massive exercise which in the normal course “can run up to a year and more”.
