Bangalore: The government aims to complete the new three-lane Marathahalli railway overbridge by the end of September.
Vinay Kumar, principal secretary of the infrastructure development department, told TOI that both the major parties involved in the construction — BDA and the railways — feel it’s a feasible target.
On Thursday, Kumar along with BDA commissioner Shankarlinge Gowda, member of the state’s empowered committee on infrastructure R K Misra and representatives of the railways, BWSSB and Bescom inspected the progress on the bridge.
Once the new bridge is complete, the old one will be demolished and another new three-lane bridge will be constructed at that spot. The bridge and the approach roads will then have six lanes.
The Marathahalli bridge, which connects Airport Road with Whitefield, is one of the most congested spots in the city. Last month, TOI reported that it takes about 35 minutes to cross the 0.3-km stretch.
R K Misra said a BWSSB line still needs to be shifted and that is expected to be done quickly. He said the contractor has also been asked to speed up the work.
“All the agencies concerned came together and I feel a lot more confident today about quick completion of the project than I was yesterday,” Kumar said.
