Rain preparedness in Bangalore is receiving a lift from Delhi. The Bangalore Mahanagara Palike has put into service a heavy duty suction machine brought from Delhi to clear clogging in the inaccessible stretches along the storm water drains.

The machine is on a rent of Rs eight lakh from the contractor-party working with the Delhi Water Board, for a month. On Friday, the BMP put the machine to use at the Central Silk Board Junction, on Hosur Road.

Over the last two weeks, it has been employed at clogged stretches like the Kino Talkies junction in Sheshadripuram and Railway track limits in Srirampura, BMP sources said.

They noted that the jetty machines available with the BWSSB are ineffective against the clogs in the order and type that are seen along the SWD.

The help from Delhi has meanwhile subtly put paid to the other campaign - 24-hour patrol along the Storm Water Drains bed. The patrol had been launched in late April under the name SWORD (Storm Water Drain Obstruction Removal Drive). It was meant to nab the culprits who litter the SWDs with construction debris, packaging material and such others.

Sources said that the men and materials are in short-supply to handle the 24-hour exercise. It has been temporarily halted, they said.
