BANGALORE: The Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Ltd. (BMRCL) is ready to move into a fancy 30,000 sq ft corporate office at Shantinagar BMTC bus station.

The glitzy and spacious office was formally inaugurated on Saturday by Deputy Chief Minister B.S. Yediyurappa.

There are eight conference rooms, cubicles for about 300 staffers, library, boardrooms, leisure areas and a spacious canteen. BMRCL has taken the entire third floor of the BMTC building on rent, and will move into the new office by the first week of July.

The corporate office is expected to turn into a major hub of the Metro Rail project, the first phase of which is scheduled for completion in 2009 and the second phase in 2011.

Mr. Yediyurappa said that the Metro should have come to the city long ago considering Bangalore's emergence as a major player in the India map.

"Wherever you go in the world, India's image is being projected through Bangalore," he noted.

Traffic congestion

But he was quick to add that the citizens had to bear with the traffic congestion and other hassles related to the project construction for some time. "The public will have to put up with some hardships for the sake of development."

To placate what BMRCL managing director V. Madhu dubbed as the "Land Losers' Association," the corporation offered a bouquet to a representative of the business establishments opposed to the Metro Rail's alignment along the Indiranagar-C.M.H. Road.

The gathering of officials gathered at the fancy main conference room of the corporate office applauded the gesture.
